In Defense of Running

In Defense of Running

I ran the Routeburn Track end-to-end-to-end yesterday. It is one of the great walks here in NZ. A beautiful track with views of rugged mountains, glacial hanging valleys, and even to the Tasman Sea. Running from one end of the track to the other and then back is something like 40 miles and 6000 feet of elevation gain and loss. It makes for a long, and incredibly rewarding day. About midday a lady on the track scolded me for running, saying that the beauty of the place was wasted on me because I was travelling too fast to appreciate it. You may have a point, ma’am, but you forget that, unlike you, I get to see these sights twice. — Nate Bender
